Will feels like he let Luke down and that he should have been able to do something to save him. He still feels bad about Luke’s death and thinks about him everyday. He is scared that one day he will slip up, drink again, and become addicted. He tries to treat everyone fairly. Will grew up hearing in an otherwise all deaf family. In elementary school, he was made fin of because his speech sounded different. He fought physically and verbally with the kids who made fun of him or his parents. He had not heard speech very often as all of his family communicated with American Sign Language. He attended years of speech therapy and was able to correct his speech. His parents signed him up for Taekwondo lessons to help him lean discipline and he loved it.

By the time he reached middle school he had many friends and was very popular. He was doing very well in Taekwondo and won many tournaments. He did well in school getting mostly A’s and B’s.

In high school, he reached the level of black belt in Taekwondo. He kept his grades high and was looking foreword to going to college. In his senior year, he and his friends started to drink and do drugs a lot. Will did not want his family to find out and was able to keep his grades up to receive a full academic scholarship to the local university.

In his freshman year of college he spun out of control. Not living with his parents meant he did not even try to hide his drinking. He hardly attended classes and never did work, which caused him to fail his first semester. In his second semester, he continued to drink and started doing drugs. One night near the end of the semester, he was at a party with some friends and saw one of his friends (Luke) O.D. right in front of him. This really shook Will up. He again failed this semester and dropped out of school. He moved back home, and with the help and support of his family he got treatment for depression, and went to AA and NA meetings.

After he took a year off and his life was under control, again he started going to college again part time. He lived at home with his family and worked at a sporting goods store to pay his tuition, as he had lost his scholarship. He really buckled down and worked hard. He switched to a full time student while continuing to work. He took summer classes and winterim classes. At first, he was unsure what he wanted to major in but after talking to an academic advisor he decided to major in Social Work with a minor in Heath Promotion and Wellness. He heard about Horizon from the Social Worker he worked with in his internship and thought it may be a good fit for him.
