Trent was sick of being in the car. He knew it was his fault. If he wasn’t so messed up and had so many panic attacks they would already be there. He had to admit, while he didn’t love Kelly and Ryan, they weren’t bad. They never got mad when he needed them to stop so he could get out of the car, or the fact that it was silent the whole way because he didn’t listen to music anymore. It was too painful; it reminded him of how his life used to be and of his mom.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, he saw a sign that said Welcome to Horizon. Ryan parked the car, and only after the engine was shut off did Trent remove his seatbelt. While Ryan grabbed his bags out of the trunk, Kelly turned around in her seat and asked, “You ready?” He shrugged. Its not as if he had a choice, he was officially a ward of the state now. Besides, as nice as Kelly and Ryan were he hardly knew them, and their home was not his home. He would never have his home back…so it did not matter to him where he slept and ate. He did not look forward to being around counselors 24/7 though. He’d had not so great experiences with them recently, and he was tired of them always trying to get into his head and make him talk.
They stepped out of the car. He had been fine in his maroon graphic tee with a picture of a guitar on the front, medium wash jeans and black Converse sneakers when they had left Bellingham early that morning. Now he felt a little bit cold so he grabbed his grey sweatshirt from the backseat and slipped it over his head. He held out his hand and Ryan handed him his backpack but held on to his larger duffel bag. He offered Ryan a small smile; he knew Ryan would not let him try to carry everything that is just how he was. He put the backpack on his back, turned around, and pulled his guitar case out. He hadn’t wanted to bring it, but Kelly had insisted. He gripped it firmly in his right hand and closed the door. They walked into the building and followed the signs to the main office. Ryan and Trent stood off to the side in awkward silence; neither knew what to say to the other, While Kelly spoke to the receptionist.
