Things here were so different then what Anthony was used to. The temperature was colder outside then where he lived, and it rained a lot around here. In New Port Beach California it only rained once or twice a year. This place was gonna take a lot of getting used to. Back home he wasn't used to having so much supervision either. The counselors around here seemed like they were breathing down his neck .. always asking him questions. Watching him from a distance. He had hit one the other day and got assigned a writing assignment. They were all trying so hard to figure out what was wrong with him. But he wasn't going to budge. If he didn't tell someone he trusted what he had seen then he wasn't going to tell them.
He looked around the room he was now in. He saw an empty chair close to the fire place. He moved to it and sat down. He took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. He wished there was a way he could see Sam. Deep down he missed her. He'd never admit it out loud but he did. He looked down and opened his notebook to start writing again.

Katie was almost sure that she would never fit into this place. She has been here for only two weeks or a bit more maybe, and she already hated it. Everything about this place was boring and terrible. It made her to want to go home. Yes, she hated her home and constantly ran away from it - the reason she was here, in fact, but she still thought that her home would be better than this place. When she first came here, she thought that it was better than her home, but she changed her thoughts soon.
Katie entered the main lodge of the school. Usually it was full of students, but today it seemed quite. Katie looked around curiously. She saw only one boy, sitting at the fireplace. Katie stopped unsure what to do. She didn't know whether to go somewhere else, or stay here. As always, she couldn't find the place where she belonged. Finally she decided to take a seat at the fireplace. She approached the couch near it, and sat down on it. She wasn't in a mood to talk really, so she didn't say anything, just kept staring at the fireplace.

Anthony sighed staring at the notebook. He was having trouble writing two pages of being sarcastic about the topic they had given him. It was a tough front to put up all the time. But he thought sooner or later they had to give up and leave him alone. But so far they were relentless. Always trying to figure out what was going on inside his head. That made him mad. He didn't want to share. He's expressed that he doesn't want to share. But they kept hounding him any way.
Anthony looked up to see a girl sit down. He wasn't sure if he should talk to her. She just stared at the fire. He let a good five minutes pass. She didn't seem to move or talk. She just stared. He found it sort of odd. He took in a deep breath and looked back at his note book. "It doesn't matter how long you stare at it .. The fire isn't going to change any" he wrote a few words in his notebook. Sam used to sit and stare at the fire's they would have on the beach after sun fall during a party. It seemed to calm her while she waited for her high to kick in. He tried it a couple times but he never saw or felt what she did. All he wanted now was to feel that high and be with Sam. He was pretty sure she had moved on from him by now and forgot he ever existed. But he would never forget her. His eyes glanced up for a moment to see if his words even registered in the girls mind.

Katie wasn't in this world. Well, her mind wasn't. It was somewhere else. No, that's wrong. Her mind wasn't anywhere. It was blank. Empty. Absolutely empty. She wasn't thinking about anything. Well, maybe just because, she was tired of thinking. She hasn't done anything but thinking all this time she has spent here, in Mt. Horizon. Her head was about to explode. It hurt so badly. But to stop thinking wasn't too good way either. In fact, thinking calmed her down.
Suddenly Katie heard the boy's voice. She moved her eyes quickly to the boy. She tried to understand what he just said. Though it was hard, because she wasn't thinking about anything at the moment. Then she realized, or rather remembered what he said. Katie chuckled unintentionally. Then moved her eyes back to the fire again.
"I know. I can't change anything." Katie said her thoughts out aloud unintentionally. She shook her head and laughed ironically.

"I know. I can't change anything."
Anthony's eyes moved to her now. He was surprised at her words. Most people usually said nothing. What surprised him even more was that her words weren't as sarcastic as his or biting his head off for even saying something to her. she said she couldn't change anything. Now he knew that wasn't true. If he could change things then she could too. It all had to do with motivation. How much she wanted what she was after. He shifted in the chair so now he was sort of facing her. "You don't really think that now do you? .. You can always change something ... just takes motivation and the want to change it." He sort of laughed to himself .. Now he sounded just like those counselors that were breathing down his neck. He shook his head. "You know what ... don't take that advice .. those damn counselors are starting to rub off on me" He mumbled the last 9 or 10 words he had said. He couldn't believe he was giving advice like that.

Katie wasn't waiting for the boy to say anything at all, well, she hoped he didn't. She continued staring at the fire, sighing and shaking her head again. She wasn't going to say that in fact, but it was too late now. She would never say it to anyone, especially to the guy he didn't even know. But that was what she thought. She couldn't change anything. She knew it. Because, she already tried to. When she ran away from home... The first try. Unsuccessful one. The second one was also unsuccessful, and even worse. Her parents sent her to this damn place after that.
Katie moved her eyes slowly to the guy as he spoke. She looked confused at first, but her face changed as the guy finished speaking. Katie smiled and laughed quietly. "Thank you for suggestion, but it isn't that helpful, trust me. And yeah, I said what I was thinking. I know better, right?" Katie said glancing at the boy, with a little tone of irritation in her voice and sight too.

"Thank you for suggestion, but it isn't that helpful, trust me. And yeah, I said what I was thinking. I know better, right?"
Anthony's eyes watched her. He studied her for a moment. He then shut his book and moved from the chair to sit next to her on the couch. His eyes stared at the fire for a moment. "Sometimes .. saying what you think ... isn't such a bad thing .. if you have someone willing to listen." He was willing to listen. He figured there would be no harm in it. He wasn't telling his deepest darkest secrets. And maybe it would make this girl feel better. He looked over to her and stuck his hand out. "I'm Tony" He was trying to be polite. He figured if he had to be here for as long as it takes for him to heal .. which is next to never .. he might as well make it so that every one doesn't hate him. Maybe having a friend here and there wouldn't hurt. He figured him and Shelby were as close as they were gonna get to being any sort of friend. She didn't trust so easily .. and he really didn't either. He had known Sam for years and she still knows nothing of why he doesn't sleep at night, and why he wanted to feel numb and be high. Sam, she took care of him with no questions asked. He wanted that again.

Katie looked over at guy, as he sat down on the couch next to her. She smirked at his remark and shaking her head, she looked down at her knees. But she didn't know what to say. It was so hard for her to tell people what she thought really. She didn't trust them. She didn't trust anyone. In her seventeen years of life, she hasn't mat anyone who could gain her trust. Not even a single person, and now she was sure that she wouldn't meet anyone like that ever. And sometimes losing hope hurts...
Katie saw the boy's hand, and heard his voice, and it sobered her from her thoughts again. Katie looked at him, and moved her hand slowly, shaking hands with him. "I'm Katie. Um... Nice to meet you." Katie said and smirked again. She didn't really like to say "nice to meet you" to people, because in fact, it was never nice to meet other people for her. She was sure that they were just like other, or rather all humans, and that was what she really believed in. "Can I ask you... Um... Why are you here? I mean, why did they sent you here, at Mt. Horizon?" Katie just wondered, and besides that was the usual question at Mt. Horizon, when kids met each other. "Why are you here?" That was the first question they asked to you.

"I'm Katie. Um... Nice to meet you... Can I ask you... Um... Why are you here? I mean, why did they sent you here, at Mt. Horizon?"
Anthony looked down hearing her question. It was the first time he had been asked that question. A lot of things ran through his head. Seeing his mother brutally beaten and drug off and his father shot and killed. No one knew he saw that. But that was the real reason he was there. That's where and why everything started. Started spinning out of control. All he wanted to do was forget. He then thought about Sam. He was protecting her and he got arrested and charged with assault and then for possession of an illegal substance on top of it. Heroine. He craved it terribly. "Possession of illegal substance ... it was either prison or here and .. my sister opted for here .... so far its not much better then being locked up if you ask me" His eyes moved to hers. He could never tell what people were thinking in this place. He hated that. He was usually good at reading people.

Katie nodded her head and moved her eyes slowly back to the fireplace. She was quiet for some seconds, until she finally decided to speak. "Um... You mean drugs?" Katie said and bit her tongue. She understood everything perfectly, but she couldn't thought of anything to say. And like always, she felt uncomfortable at this conversation too.
Katie never thought about drugs. About using them. Maybe it was better... Better to run away from home? Maybe it could help her? Who knows... These thoughts started haunting Katie's mind. So she shook her head, trying to stop these thoughts. Katie was surprised that the guy didn't ask the question back. So, she decided to still say this... Well, he would ask her that soon anyway.
"I ran away from home... Twice." Katie said with ironical smile on her face. It sounded a bit stupid to her. But, she really didn't have any other choice.

"Um... You mean drugs? I ran away from home... Twice."
Anthony nodded. Running away wasn't such a bad thing. "Yeah drugs .. Heroine ... and Narcotics .. They helped me forget .. " Forget what exactly he would never tell. He would go to parties and get high. Most of the time he wouldn't stay at the party the whole night. He would leave with Sam after 30 minutes or an hour and go back to her place. Even with Staff and her dad around, they were still completely alone. No one in the house cared enough to check up on her to see what she was doing and who she was doing it with. She had always helped him forget things. "I used to stay out for two or three days at a time .. Not like anyone ever really noticed .. or even cared .. That's as close to running away as I ever got" As he thought about it. Doing drugs was his way of running away from things. While he wasn't physically running away from home and his problems, every time he shot up or swallowed a pill he was running from something. From all those memories burned into his mind.

Katie nodded her head and smiled unintentionally. She understood what he meant. By "forgetting". Well, she didn't have anything to forget, but... She really want to forget.... Life. Yes, she just wanted to forget life, everything about it. Why did she run away? Because she wanted to run away from this life. Yeah, not just from that city, but... From this life. But, like it seemed, there were people who had tried other ways to "run away" from this life.
"That's right... I know what you mean." Katie said with extremely quiet voice and sighed. "It's almost like running away... But well, I've never thought about using drugs." Katie admitted and looked away, fixing her eyes to the window and taking a deep breathe.

"It's almost like running away... But well, I've never thought about using drugs."
Anthony nodded. Most people don't until the first time they do. Then its all you start thinking about. Your next fix and how it will make you feel. When he was high he felt untouchable. "Drugs make you feel good ... Don't start unless you plan on staying high ... they're a bitch to get off of" He hated what he was going through. The cold sweats, the way his body hurt and he felt sick all the time .. on top of all of that they wouldn't just let him lay in his bed to get through it. They were constantly making him do things he didn't want or feel like doing. Going on hikes, doing school work .. chores and extra stuff for punishment. He didn't ask for any of this stuff.

Drugs... It made Katie feel kind of... Scared. Yes, she was scared of using them. Because she was sure she couldn't get away from them anymore, if she did it once. And it would be really hard... No, she didn't want it. Even though she didn't know almost anything about them. But it sounded way too creepy... Katie shook her head and sighed. "Yeah... I've heard that it's almost impossible to stop using them, if you start using them once... And I don't want it." Katie admitted and looked back at fireplace, continuing staring at it. Strange, but it calmed her down a bit.

"Yeah... I've heard that it's almost impossible to stop using them, if you start using them once... And I don't want it."
Anthony nodded. It was probably a good choice on her part to not start them. He had never planned on starting to use them but Sam told him he would be able to forget everything with them. And he was the only one he really ever trusted and she was right .. He forgot everything when he was with her and high. It was the only time he was ever truly happy. He looked down at his hands seemingly lost in his own thoughts for a moment. He missed her. He's never missed anyone like this since he lost his parents. "Its probably a good choice on your part ... But I didn't ask for these people to --fix-- me .. I was just fine on my own .. They pretend to care here .. But how many of them do you think really means what they say? .. We're a bunch of screw ups .."
